  • Short answer: a lifetime. Production, veterans, and MFA artists are constantly learning new techniques and information whether new or old. HOWEVER, we can teach you the basics with just one of our events. The basics are the same whether you are taking an event, beginner, intermediate or advance class. It will take practice and a couple additional classes to learn new techniques before you create what you deem a masterpiece. But we have seen students come in with no experience to making advance work within 3 to 4 months, just depends on the student.

  • No. Not at the moment. However, you can leave a posting for one of the artists in our studio. Just email Outreach@vsgnc.com

  • Depends. It could be from dryness or poor attachment! Let's talk dryness. Both the handle and piece need to be the same dryness to ensure proper attachment. When clay dries it shrinks. Applying a handle that is 5% dry to a piece that is 50% dry will cause for cracking. The other reason would be poor attachment. Scoring is vital. Sticking clay on clay without scoring is like placing a sheet of paper on top of another sheet of paper. Scoring and creates grooves for the slip to fill in and join both pieces.

  • Depends. 99% of our studio glazes are food safe. Glazes with crackling is not. If you are purchasing glaze from our store please make sure to ask before purchasing.

  • Yes and no. There must be a clean surface on your piece for us to lay on the kiln shelf. You can pay to rent stilts for firing.

  • Yes you are. Our beginner class primarily focuses on memorizing the steps, some starter what ifs, and studio/ equipment use. You will use those same basic steps in intermediate, however we will start to add some new techniques for you to learn so you can expand your world of possibilities with clay.

  • Bottom crack "S crack" are due to excess water in the bottom of your piece. Make sure to constantly remove water from the bottom of your piece and to compress your bottoms. Cracks can also happen due to dryness. Make sure to slow dry pieces that have thin and thick sections.

  • Wetness! Pieces that are too thick or work that is being rushed will likely exploded when temperate hits the boiling point of water. Air bubbles DO NOT cause explosions.

  • We are a member only firing studio. We do offer a firing membership.

  • Not right off hand. An in home pottery studio can be expensive. I recommend be part of a studio for a least a year before making the investment. Committing to an activity for a year shows how serious you are for starters. Secondly, trying to get your home suited for a studio could take months leaving you feeling burned out. Imagine sitting down to throw and realizing your space isn't functional or you need something else just to be comfortable. For example, most people think the garage is perfect until its too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer. If they get that settled then its the lighting, the water, the outlets and so on and so on. Garages weren't design for humans to hang out in. Really commit to pottery first! That commitment will ensure you don't spend thousands on a hobby that you won't do in 12 months.

  • Members and drop ins are free to use the studio during normal business hours. Members are not allowed to attend Intermediate/ Advance Classes (Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm until 9 pm).
